Canterbury Rams forward Lachlan Olbrich has scooped the biggest prize at the National Basketball League awards.

The 20-year-old Australian was named the league’s most valuable player.

He led the Rams to a 17-3 record and was good for a double-double most nights.

He is averaging 20.1 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists. Crucially, he collected an inbound pass from Taylor Britt and made a lay-up with a second to go in the second period of overtime in the semifinal against the Taranaki Airs to secure a spot in tomorrow’s final.

Olbrich was selected in the all-star five and was also named most outstanding forward and the youth player of the year.

Rams team-mate Britt was named most improved player and also made the all-star five.

Auckland Tuatara centre Rob Loe, Franklin Bulls import guard Luther Muhammad and Hawke’s Bay Hawks import guard Isaiah Moore joined the Rams pair in the all-star team.

Rams coach Judd Flavell was awarded the Steve McKean coach of the year title.

Loe scooped the defensive player of the year award for the second consecutive year. He mounted a compelling case for MVP as well considering he averaged 20.2 points, 11.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

He also claimed the Stan Hill Trophy as the most outstanding New Zealand forward for a third consecutive year.

Muhammad was named the most outstanding guard and picked up the scoring title as well. He posted 25.9 points per game and boasted the most effective mid-ranger jumper in the game.

Hawks forward Josh Roberts won the rebounding title and Tuatara guard Corey Webster nabbed the assist title.

Otago Nuggets small forward Josh Aitcheson was named in the Rapid League all-star five alongside Kazlo Evans jun, Kaia Isaac, Nick Davidson and Hayden Jones.

The league also dished out some awards for the media. Otago Daily Times reporter Adrian Seconi was named journalist of the year.
