National Brotherhood of Snowsports visits Wānaka

Wānaka Mountain Guides had the honour of hosting a group from the National Brotherhood of Snowsports (NBS) during their recent visit to New Zealand.

The group from all over the USA converged on Wānaka in their ongoing project to backcountry ski on every continent. In 2023 they visited Morroca on their Ski Africa trip and they plan on skiing in Antarctica next year.

The National Brotherhood of Snowsports, founded in 1973, is dedicated to increasing diversity in winter sports, fostering participation among communities of colour, and providing access to opportunities in the industry.

Their visit to Wānaka is a testament to their commitment to exploring global snowsport destinations and encouraging cross-cultural connections within the winter sports community.

During their stay, the NBS group experienced a Whakatau facilitated by Joe from WanaHaka providing a cultural connection to whenua/land and establishing a bond of togetherness/whānau/family between the group and their guides.

The group then spent 10 days guided backcountry skiing and splitboarding near Treble Cone and in the Harris Mountains, and receiving instruction in backcountry travel and safety skills. The group also visited Aoraki Mount Cook National Park but did not manage to ski on the Haupapa Tasman Glacier as per the plan due to the weather.

The NBS mission aligns with WMG’s values of inclusivity and adventure, and we were excited to share the unique landscapes and experiences that make Wānaka a world-class year-round adventure destination.
