A central Dunedin shop owner is concerned for her safety after the front window of her shop was smashed on Saturday night.

St Andrew St Indian clothing and jewellery shop L S Jewels and Outfits owner Sandeep Kaur said she was in a state of shock when she arrived at the shop yesterday.

Although nothing had been stolen, she was worried about the possibility of someone breaking in while she was there.

She was now having CCTV installed.

"We do have a lot of expensive stuff in here.

"If someone stole the jewellery, it would be a huge loss for us.

"I’m really scared now.

Mrs Kaur said a friend who was passing the shop about midnight called her and told her about the broken window.

She said she had no idea who it could have been.

Ms Kaur said she had complained to the police, but felt she was not being taken seriously.

"They just gave us a sticker and told us to call 105 [non-emergency number] and claim insurance."

At 5am on Saturday, another shop on St Andrew St also had their window smashed.

The business owner, who declined to be named, said she had CCTV footage of a drunk man breaking the window.

"He was absolutely drunk.

"He looked like he was at home trying get in his front door and no-one was letting him in.

"He spent five minutes trying to break in.

"He must have a sore shoulder this morning."

She said she did not believe the two incidents were related.

She was also disappointed in the police response to the incident.

"They’re just not looking after minor crime — they’re just not."

A police spokesman said they received a report about the jewellery shop and were investigating.
