Invercargill-born prima ballerina Rowena Othlie Jackson has died, aged 98.

She died at her home on the Gold Coast, Queensland, on August 15.

In 1941, Jackson won New Zealand’s first Royal Academy of Dance scholarship to study in London.

By 1946, she had joined the Sadler’s Wells Ballet (now known as The Royal Ballet) in London, and in 1954 she was promoted to prima ballerina.

She retired in 1959 and moved back to New Zealand, where she became artistic director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet and served as director of the New Zealand Ballet School.

An obituary will follow.
