Russell helps NZ men remain unbeaten

Another day, another Black Sticks win and another goal for an Otago great.

This time, Kane Russell was the Otago man popping up to help the New Zealand men retain their perfect record at the Nations Cup in Poland.

The Black Sticks made it four from four with a 4-2 win over Korea yesterday.

It means they top their pool and sail into the Nations Cup semifinals, where they will play either France or Malaysia.

The Black Sticks led Korea 1-0 after the first quarter through a Scott Boyde field goal.

They earned a flurry of penalty corners in the second quarter and Russell, the drag flick specialist, converted one of them to make it 2-0.

Korea quickly replied to make it 2-1 at halftime, but Jake Smith and Isaac Houlbrooke goals in the second half gave the Black Sticks some breathing room despite a late Korean second.

In Spain, the New Zealand women came from 2-0 down to seal a 2-2 draw with Japan in their Nations Cup tournament.

The Kiwis missed two penalty stroke chances but dominated the second half with goals to Stephanie Dickins and Hannah Gravenall.

The Black Sticks women have a rest day before playing Canada in their final pool game.
