The Southern Steel’s unsung hero has scooped one of the team’s major awards this season.

Renee Savai’inaea was named the Steel’s player of the year at the franchise’s awards night this week.

The wing defence was everywhere this season and was among the ANZ Premiership’s top 10 for intercepts, finishing with 21.

Captain Kate Heffernan was given the Wendy Frew medal, awarded to the player who demonstrates excellence, commitment and loyalty.

Heffernan led from the middle all season in her first year officially stepping into the captain’s role.

Abby Lawson, who returned to the Steel this season after a hiatus, picked up two awards for her great season.

The goal defence was named the people’s choice MVP, on the back of a stellar season in which she earned a starting spot from midway through the season, and personality of the year.

Lawson’s defensive partner, Taneisha Fifita was named most improved player. She too returned to the Steel this season, after two years away completing a mission in Brisbane.

Shooter Jen O’Connell, who had terrible luck with injuries, was named won the community engagement award for her work away from the court.
