Hind and weaner sale best yet

An annual hind and weaner sale gets "better and better", a southern deer stud owner says.

Brock Deer co-owner Elliot Brock said his hind and weaner stag sale in West Otago was "exceptional" on August 6 .

Of the 83 lots offered, 81 sold for an average of $1968 including a top price of $21,000 for rising 3-year-old hind 730P121.

Other highlights included yearling stag 718BK23 selling for $9700 and embryo progeny of W476 fetching $7400.

The hind and weaner sale was "comfortably the best" in its nine-year history.

The 24 lots of the 39 lots to sell at Black Forest Deer Hind sale in South Otago on August 8 included an $19,500 embryo and a $16,200 8-month-old hind.

Ardleigh Deer Hind Sale held a hind sale in Geraldine on August 7.

The full clearance of the 50 lots on offer included a top price for hind 22369 for $4600.

The Hudson family bought about 370 hinds from Netherdale in Northern Southland to help establish a stud on their about 840ha commercial deer farm in Geraldine.

Foveran Deer held its 41st hind and weaner sale in Hakataramea Valley on August 5.

Stud manager Barry Gard said 59 lots were offered and four hinds were passed in.

The average price of about $1800 included two Pure Jameson embryos sharing the top price of $5000 each.

"We are pretty happy considering the market."

Arawata Red Deer Hind Sale had a full clearance of 31 in-fawn hinds on offer in Pinebush, Southland on August 4.

The hinds sold for an average of $858 including a top price of $1700 for rising 2-year-old hind Yellow-Pin 197/22.

Stud co-owner John Somerville said the average price was lower than his hind sale last year.

The rising 3-year-olds had the most interest from buyers at the sale this year.

"The second calvers sold better than the first calvers."
